Summer learning journey | Tastes of summer

Today I finished the tastes of summer task, for the summer learning journey.

Before starting task I watched the to get an Idea of what to do.

For this task we had to pick 3 favourite foods that we like to eat during the summer time.

I had to make sure to use adjectives to describe how it feels while eating our favourite food.

This task was really enjoyable to do.

Building a dam | Summer learning journey

Today I completed the dam task of the summer learning journey.

First I went on the summer learning job to find out what a dam is. I watched both to understand what a dam is.

A dam is a barrier that stops the flow of water.

After getting a better understanding of what a dam is, I started doing my template. After completing my dam on the template I wrote what materials I used and why I used them. My materials were sticks, mud, rocks and leaves.

In my template you can see why I decided to used these materials.

Hana Koko

Today I done the Hana koko task for the summer learning journey task.

I first watched the to see what I have to do. Before starting the task I read the article.

Afterwards I went on the template to begin my design.

In my design it includes: Shorts, a t-shirt and sandals.

Lastly I gave my reasoning on why I used these clothes for my design.

Nano Girl | Xylophones

In this activity for the summer learning journey we had to make 2 xylophones. I created one xylophone using a glass cup and water and the second using paper and tape.

For the first xylophone I used 3 cups. Then I poured different amounts of water into the glass to make  different pitches. A pitch is the vibration from the cup which makes the sound.

How much water you have, depends on how much glass can vibrate. Like if the glass of cup is halfway fulled of water it makes a low pitch, but if there is a small amount of glass it make a high pitch sound. Lastly, I tested my xylophone using a pencil, by gently tapping the glass.

For the second and last xylophone I made was used out of paper and tape. To make the xylophone I used 5 sheets of paper. Afterwards I rolled the paper into a tube, then used tape to secure the paper from it opening. I had to cut the tubes smaller and smaller from each other to make the different pitches. Similar to what I did on the first xylophone. If you have a long tube it would most likely make a low pitch sound. If you have a short tube you most like to get a high pitch sound.

Here is me using my xylophones:

Haiku

For this task we had to try make a haiku based on summer.

A haiku is a poet that has 5 syllables, 7 syllables , lastly 5 syllables again.

My haiku is about being at the beach. Here is my haiku: Sun shining on me, relax on the hot yellow sand, enjoy a nice ice cream.

This is my favourite task yet.

Summer learning journey | Commenting

Commenting on others blog is a great way to share your idea learning with each other.

I commented of Deysen's blog post of his Kawhaiwhai blog post.

His blog post was amazing. My question to Deysen was how did his colours represent summer. The colours that he used were white, black and green.

Optical illusion | Summer learning journey

For the third activity we made a optical illusion.

I went on website about optical illusions, to get an idea on what to use to draw my illusion.

The shape I used for my optical illusion was shape. I started with a big square, then I copied and paste the square multiple times. Then I made the squares smaller and smaller.

Kowhaiwhai Art

Today I did the Kowhaiwhai art task for the summer learning journey.

Before starting the task, I watched a video to get a understanding on what to do.

I made all of my Kowhaiwhai's huge to represent a big wave.

Lastly I made the background half blue, half yellow to represent summer.

Insect art | Summer learning journey

This summer learning journey task I was called insect.

We first went outside to find twigs, petals and leaves. After we found all the materials we needed, we had to make a insect.

The insect that I made was a butter fly.

Here is my creation :

Summer learning journey | fishy false

For our second activity we did a task called fishy false.

I first watched a video that gave me a understanding on what to do.

Afterwards I watched a video about 2 men fishing and one of them lose teeth. I watched the video to get a idea on what to write on my comic strip. Then I wrote my comic strip.

Here is my comic strip:

Activity 1 | SLJ | Nano girl

In the first part of the summer learning journey we were introduced to nano girl, also known as Michelle Dickson. She is a educator who teaches kids in New Zealand about science.

For our first task with nano girl, we had to go for a scavenger hunt to find some materials that we would be using with for the next 6 weeks.

We used screencastify to showcase we found during the treasure hunt.

Presentation

Today my group presented our presentation about our shelter to get the contract.

First we got prepared by practising our lines from our speech. We had to make sure that our speech persuades our clients.

After that we presented our speech. In our speech it involved why should they invest in it, the alternatives of each material, how we designed the shelter, and what we used to create it.

Our feedback was about most of the time being used by saying nothing like forgetting lines. Our second feedback was not showing our cardboard prototype while presenting. Our last feedback was about the look of our presentation.

Our feedback taught me to be fully prepared. It also taught me to pay more attention to the work. Next time I will learn to speak with more confidence.

Faulty Reasoning

Faulty Reasoning is giving a reason which didn't strongly convince another side of their argument. There are 5 types of faulty reasoning: illogical or simplified assumption, circular reasoning , over generalisation, contradiction and biased argument.

Circular reasoning is supporting a claim with the same claim.

Contradiction is providing evidence that goes against the original argument.

Illogical or simplified assumption is making a global statement when there are likely exceptions.

A over generalisation is making a global statement when there are likely exceptions.

A biased argument is making a claim that is influenced by your own personal feelings or experience

The first activity we did was to find a sentence that involves a faulty reasoning. We had to try figure out what faulty reasoning that the sentence was using. The second activity we did was where we had to guess what faulty reasoning that a sentence was using. The last and third activity we did was where we had to make a faulty reasoning sentence for the 5 faulty reasoning's.

Filming

This week my group started filming using our screenplays.

Before filming we practised our lines. We used our story boards to figure out what location that we are are going to film at.

After that we started filming the scenes of our narrative.  I found filming fun but hard because sometimes we forget what to say.

Maori

Today I matched Maori names with the English name.

First we tried translating the Maori names without using a Maori dictionary. Then I used the Maori dictionary to help me translate the Maori names I don't know.

After that I did a task where I tried to translate a conversation from Maori to English. We tried figuring out what the sentence say with our prior knowledge on translating Maori words and names.. For example: Te kau ma waru ōku tau= I am eighteen years old

Inquiry

Emergency shelters are protection against natural disasters such as a storm or an earthquake.

The Protectors requested aluminium foil, hard plastic, metal poles, clay,  chicken wire, and plaster of Paris

The aluminium foil is for the inside of the shelter, the foil is used because it is a good insulator and heat reflector.

The hard plastic is for the windows, the hard plastic is used because it’s easier to shape than glass.

The metal poles are for stabilisation, it was used because it is a heat reflector insulator.

The clay is used to form most of the shelter, it was used because it is tough, so if the shelter topples over then the poles will not easily break off.

The plaster of Paris and the chicken wire is used for a similar purpose as the aluminium foil, they were used because they were used to hold the clay.

The tin can is used for the door, the front and the back of the shelter. The purpose of this shelter was to protect against bush fires

Emergency shelters are used worldwide and are very important. There are a lot of steps you need to do to build an emergency shelter.

Kiwi Sport | Touch rugby

During this weeks  touch rugby we practise two and three men settle.

A two men settle is when one person plays dummy-half, and the other person is a runner. The runners is the person who gains the metres for your team. Once the runner gets touched he plants the ball. The dummy-half is the person who passes the ball once one of the runner gets touched he plants the ball.

A three men settle is when the runner gets touched , then the dummy-half passes the ball to the other runner which is the third person.

After that we played of touch. My team loss because our defence was poor. We weren't doing any 2 man or three man settle. We also didn't play the ball with a great attitude.

This session of touch teaches me how to play more smarter and better.

Volcanoes in Maori

This week for Maori we had to translate the Maori names for volcano into English.

For example: Otahuhu- Mt Richmond.

First we tried translating the Maori names of the volcanoes without using a Maori dictionary.

After that we used a Maori dictionary to find the names we don't know.

This session for Te Reo Maori was fun and amazing because I know how to say places in Maori.

Maths | Averages

This week for maths we learnt about averages.

Averages is adding up all the numbers and then dividing them by how many numbers there are.

We first added up all the numbers together from each team. The blue team had 186 points, yellow had 182 points, red had 182 point and green had 174 points.

I am going to show how to get the average for 186: First you divide 186 by 9 which equals 20.7 . People usually think it will be 20.6 but your wrong. You have to round the number. To round the decimal point up it you can use the number 5, 6, 7, 8 , 9. The numbers that make the decimal point go down are 4, 3, 2 , 1.  That's why the number is 20.7 when you divide 182 by 9 .

Reading| Synthesis| Table mat information | Making connections

This week for I did a table mat, making connections and synthesis.

The first activity I did was table mat. I had find facts, keywords. I had to define 2 keywords. and key question.

The second activity I did was making connections. I had to make 2 connection for the text to the world, text to text, and text to self.

The last activity I did was he synthesis. There are three main text of the synthesis task.

There is prior knowledge, new information and new understanding. Prior knowledge is when you already know something. New information is finding facts that you know. New understandings is the what you learnt from the book like facts and new words

Athletics

This week on Friday we did athletics day.

The first station we did was rob the nest. In this game there is one defender/tagger and the other people in the team have to rob the nest/hula-hoop.

The second station we did was long jump. The game is simple, what you have to do is try jump the farthest.

My favourite station was called discus. In this game you have to throw three hula-hoop onto 3 different poles. The first is worth 1 point, the second pole is worth 5 points and the last pole is worth 10 points.

My other favourite station was egg and spoon. In this game you have too make sure the egg doesn't fall off the spoon. You first have to around 3 cones. Then you have to go over a chair. After that you have to go around a hula-hoop. Then go over the chair again and go around the cones again.

We finished the day by doing sprints.

I enjoyed doing all of these activity/stations.

Basic facts

Today I took the speed demon challenge on Multiplication and division. It took me 4 minutes and 55 seconds. Some of the answers I got wrong because I forget them or I don’t know them. I try get more faster and learn all of my division and multiplication.

LI: To rapidly recall basic facts

Synthesis

This week for reading I did a synthesis. Synthesis is task that involves prior knowledge, new information and new understanding.

I read a book on White Water Action and I first started with my prior knowledge. Prior knowledge is what you about that topic. After that I found new information. New information talks about the things you learnt such as facts from the topic. Then I used understandings from new information I learnt from the book.

I enjoyed doing this task.

SSR Selfie

For SSR Selfie my book was called the pencil of doom. This book was about a man named henry mcthrottle. Henry was an ordinary kid who wanted to get good grades. Mr. Brainfight was like a magician, he made a pencil vanish. Then the pencil was weird because whatever you draw it will become real.

Maniakalani film festival

This years Manaiakalani film festival was held in Sylvia Park.

The first film we watched was our school's film. Our film was based on why we use sanitiser during level 2 at school.

After that we watched different films from other schools. Most on the movies were about our community heroes working during lock down.

My favourite film was community heroes from Tamaki primary school.

Screenplay

This week for writing we had to write a screen play about our narrative.

A screenplay is story written in spoken parts only.

When writing a screenplay the characters name has to be all in caps(ABC).

The name of the character has to be centre aligned.

You have to write what the character said under their names so the actor knows what to say.

It's important to know how to write a screenplay because if the actor doesn't understand it the film might be bad.

Making Connections

LI: To identify and describe connections

This week for reading I did a making connection with the book white water action.

Text to self is something that happened in the book which has happened to you. For example:In the text white water action it says I started surfing in my father's canoe. My connection that I started doing MMA in my trampoline.

Text to text is something that happened in the book that also happened in another book. For example: In the text the boy kayak-er, who has competed in many competitions. My connection in the text Chris Pither, Chris Pither is a racer

Text to world is where a text links to something we all do in the world. For example:In the text the boy won three silver medals. My connection is People that participate in the Olympics win medals.

Translating People's name

This week we translated people's names in Maori to English.

First we tried translating the Maori names into English without using a dictionary.

After that we used a Maori dictionary to help us translate the Maori names that we don't know.

If a name starts with a S or a J in Maori the name would start with the letter H because, in the Maori alphabet their is no S or a J . For example Sarah- Hare.

Maths

This week for maths we had to buddy up with a person and share what we have learnt during the past 3 weeks.

My buddy was Paul. Paul gave me some information about time. The units of time are 1 minute(60 seconds), 1 hour (60 minutes) , 24 hours (1 day) 52 weeks (365 days/1 year) and 1 decade (10 years). On a clock the thin, long hand counts the seconds and the little hand counts the hours.

My other buddy was Ariana. The information I learnt was about geometry. Geometry shapes are 2d and 3d. 2d stands for 2 dimensional, for example a square. 3d stands for 3 dimensional, for example a cube. 3d means width, length and height. The 3 in 3d represents the measurements in the shape. 2d means height and width, the 2 represents the measurements in the shape.

I like teaching others new information that they never learnt before. I was a good student too.

Inquiry | Emergency Shelters

In this week's inquiry session, we learned how to design an emergency shelter.

First, we designed a quick sketch of an emergency shelter on a piece of paper. We had to draw our design from a front angle and a side angle. We also had to think about what shape would be suitable for natural disasters such as strong winds. We used an octagon because if the wind toppled it over then it would still maintain its shape.

Next, we designed a 3d version of our emergency shelter. To help us make the 3d shapes we used an app called sketchup. We had to replicate our paper design.

Lastly, some changes we think we could make is, getting rid of some of our pillars, because the storm is capable of blowing down the pillars which will make the octagon roll repeatedly, and we could take away one of the windows so that there's a less likely chance of things flying through it.

Learning these skills help know how to gain metres more faster and get to the try line faster.

Inter school touch rugby tournament

On Wednesday some people from LS1 and LS2 went to Dunkirk Reserve for touch rugby tournament. The compeion was spilt into Y5, Y6, Y7 and Y8 different year groups.

I played in the year 5 team. Our first game was against Sylvia Park primary school team 1,  we lost by 5 nil. We realised that we were bunching up where dummy-half played the ball and we didn't sub when we were tired.

Our second game was against St Patrick, we had a draw and the score was 1 to 1 . In this game we improved our defence and our offence.

Our third game was against Sylvia Park primary school team 2, we had draw and the score was 2 to 2. Our defence was starting to become poor, we left wide open gaps for them to run through.

Our final game was against stone fields,we lot by 1 point. The score was 3 to 2, we were starting to get tired and sub every 5 minutes.

This tournament was really enjoyable and intense. Testing my ability against others taught me what to practise more and what to do more.

Table mat | Reading

This week for reading we did the table mat task.

First we had to read the book(white water action). Next I skim read the book to find any keywords 6 and 4 facts.

I had to find 4 facts about the topic (white water action). We had find 6 keywords from a page and define them(give the meaning of the word). We had added a image to represent what we explained.

After that I considered 2 key questions that the author would have thought about before writing it for a reader. Then I made question I would ask the author.

Kiwi Sport

This week for kiwi sport we practised 2 men drive. 2 men drive is where one person plays dummy- half and the other player is the runner. The runner will run, get touched and roll the ball to the dummy half. The dummy-half will pass the back to the runner. Both players will do this until third touch or if the runner scores the try.

After that we played a game called scoop touch. There are 2 teams, there are non bibs and bibs (each has a coloured tank top). To play this you have to rugby ball. If you have a ball a player from the other team has to try touch you. If you get touch you have to pass it to the person who touched you.

Then we practise how to control the paste and to know when to pass. There were 2 attackers and 1 defender. One of the attackers have the ball, the person who has the ball they have to try make the defender focus on you. On the right moment you can pass or fake pass to your teammate.

Practising these skills help me become a better player.

Scientist | Maths

A scientist is a person who tries to understand how our world or other things work.

As a scientist it's crucial to use statistics and algebra. Scientist use algebra to calculate the measurements of objects and characteristics.

Statistics is where you gather the information(data), summarise it and decide what it means.  Algebra is where letters, numbers  and symbols are used to represent numbers to solve a equation.

Making connections

Text to world is something from the book that is related to world. For example: In the text cave creatures Nelson spiders favourite food is weta. Everybody around the world have their own favourite food.

Text to text means something from the book is similar to something that's in another book. For example:  In the text cave creatures the Nelson spider is well camouflaged

Lastly, text to self means something that happened in the book that has happened to you. For example: In the text there is a egg sac dangling from the ceiling. My connection is that a egg sac reminds me of a Christmas decoration;

Narrative

This week we learn how to plan narrative. We first recapped what a narrative is and the structure of a narrative. A narrative is a fictional(made up) story and the structure if a recount is T.O.P.E.S . T.O.P.E.S stands for (title, orientation, problem, events and solution).

The orientation has to show who, when, where and what. The problem is the main conflict that the main character has to attempt to resolve. The events shows what happens to the character as they complete step to solving the problem. The solution shows what happens to the characters while they attempt the final steps to resolving the problem.

LI: To write a short narrative

Kiwi Sport | Touch Rugby

Today we practised some basic skills for touch rugby.

We warmed-up by playing rats and rabbits. This warm-up helps us touch a player from another team faster.

After that we practised tapping, catching and passing the ball. After that we did a few passing drills and techniques that we can use on the field.

Learning these skills helps me become a more smarter player.

Insulation | Inquiry

What is insulation? Insulation is something that stops heat from escaping.

Five insulator materials are paper, plastic, polystyrene, glass and metal.

A good insulator is polystyrene (material) because the material of polystyrene helps protect the heat from escaping.

A bad insulator is something that makes the heat escape. For example: If a plastic(material) cup has a hole the heat of the water will leak(escape).

The best insulator for keeping things warm and cold is polystyrene.

Maori | Kupu

This week for Maori we did a task where we had to translate Maori to English. To help us we used the Maori dictionary to search words in Maori that we didn't know the meaning to.

After that we did a exercise where we had to look at image that shows a type of weather, and then we had match it with the Maori phrase.

For example: if the image is sunny, in Maori it's ke te mahana.

Maths | Converting measurement

Converting measurement is to multiply and divide height, length and width of something.

If you are multiplying the decimal place by 10 you shift it to the right once. For example: If I multiply 90.0 by 10 you shift the decimal point to the right because it will make the number bigger. So 90.0 x 10 = 900.

If you are dividing the decimal place by 900 you shift it to the left twice. For example: If I divide 900 by 100 I move the decimal point twice because it will make the number smaller. So 900 divided by 100 = 9.0.

If shifting a number to the left, you don't add a zero, you shift the zero from the decimal place. Also the amount of zero's mean how many times the decimal point moves to the right or left.

Place is helpful while converting measurements.

LI: To learn how to convert measurement

Touch rugby | Kiwi sport

This week for kiwi sport we learnt how to play touch rugby.

We practised drills on catching the ball, passing the ball and moving around with the ball.

The first drill we did was to help us get use to the ball. The drill involved throwing the the ball in the air, making the ball go under our legs without dropping it.

To pass the ball you have to make sure your teammate is behind you, because if you pass the ball and your  teammate is in front of you that will be a forward pass and it will be the other team's ball.

Then we did a catching technique. The technique is where you make W with our hands. This technique helps you because when your teammate passes the ball you have a nice grip of the ball so it will not drop.

After that we budded up with to did all the techniques by playing a game.

I enjoyed learning all these drills and techniques.

Reading | Table Mat

This week for reading we did a task called table mat.

First we had to read the book(Chris pither). Next I skim read the book to find keywords and facts.

I had to find 4 facts about the topic (Chris pither). We had find 3 keywords from a page and define them(give the meaning of the word).

After that I considered 2 key questions that the author would have thought about before writing it for a reader. Then I made question I would ask the author.

Inquiry

For inquiry we experimented the absorbency of a material.

We did this experiment to see which material is the most absorbent.

The materials that we used to the experiment with was nappies.

First we used a beaker to measure 100mls of water so we know how much to measure.

Next we poured the water on the material, the material I used was nappies.

We used tray to stop any spillage from happening. Once I poured the water the nappy started to absorb.

After that we lifted the nappy to see if the water spilt during the absorbency.

All of the water was absorbed into the nappy.

I found the experiment so fun because how fast the nappy absorbed the water.

LI: To learn and practise experimental methods.

Informal & formal language

What is informal and formal? Formality tells people when to use formal and informal language.

Formal is when times when rules and politeness need to be followed. An example of formal language: "Greeting my name is Oliver, would like to go down town and get some coffee ? ".

Informal is when times when rules are pointless and don't have to followed. An example of informal language: "Sup bro, wanna play some basketball on the court with the boys ".

LI: To identify informal and formal situations and language.

Maori

This week for Maori we learnt the different body parts.

For activity we had to match the body part in Maori with the body part that is English. We had to highlight the body parts in highlight we do know and the ones we don't we leave blank. For example: (waist- hope).

The words we didn't had to search it on the Maori dictionary so we know how to produce the word and know what it means.

Basic facts

For basic facts I took the speed demon challenge. I decided to do multiplication and division because I wanted to test how fast I am. My time was 5 minutes and 47 seconds. I feel like I have gone slower at my times table and division. The question hard because I was getting mucking instead of focusing.

LI: To Rapidly recall basic facts

SSR Selfie

For SSR Selfie I chose the book the Gruffalo.

The book is about a mouse and monster. The little mouse goes for a walk in the deep dark woods.
He stumbles across 3 animals which are a fox, an owl and a snake. The mouse tricks the animals by thinking the Gruffalo is real. It turns out the Gruffalo is real.

I found this book really funny and interesting to read.

LI: To retell or summarise a text.

Art Collabration

For art we recreated the cover of the Gruffalo.

The first thing we did was practised a shading on a small piece of paper. after that were given a big piece of paper that was a section of the cover. We used pastels to colour in. The first technique I learnt was blending. If you were doing the grass you would use use green then put white on top then you smudge the colours.

The second technique I learnt was smudging. Smudging is where you use 2 colours and mix them. To do the path/sand I used peach, gold and yellow and then I used a paper towel to mix the colours.

Doing this art was really enjoyable. Hopefully we could do another book cover.

LI: To collaborate with others

Recount

What is a recount?

A recount is to retell something that happened in the past. A structure of recount is TREE ( Title, reveal, events and ending).

The language that is used while doing a recount is 1st person such as I , me , my , myself and mine.

On a google doc we had to write recount of one regular day in a week.

Then we had to plan the events, the title, reveal and the ending which is the reflection.

The were four events before school, at school, after school, and after dinner.

After that I started to write my recount about my Friday routine. Some of the things I do are playing games and watching YouTube on my TV.

Making a fire/ Cooking food

First we recapped on what a hazard and a risk is. A hazard is a object that can cause harm and a risk is a possibility that a hazard can cause harm. The activities we did was making a fire and cooking s'mores.

First, we started by talking about the conditions of the activities. Some of the conditions were: we are using a brazier, the fire would be lit on concrete, and there is good enough weather for the fire to be lit.

Next, we talked about the hazards and risks, and wrote the consequences. Then we found out ways we could stop those consequences from happening, and we wrote down an emergency plan of what would happen if those consequences elevated.

Then we did the same process for making s'mores over the fire.

Once the fire was lit, we were given a demonstration by Mr Ogilvie of how the marshmallows should be cooked. Mr Ogilvie told us to put three marshmallows on a skewer and the skewer was to be held vertically through the rectangular gaps of the brazier. We then added chocolate sauce if you like to and the crackers to complete the s'more.

L.I: To assess risk with in a simple activity

Maths

Rounding is finding the nearest ten, hundred, thousand.

Addition and division are both strategies the are used for rounding. To round the person needs to find the mean, to find the mean get a set of numbers like 5,7,1,9,3 and then add them altogether which would make the number 25. Then divide them by the amount of numbers there are which makes 5.

Now this is were the rounding begins, if the number is 5-9 that's called high five. If the number 0-4 it's called floor four For example 21.85 then it becomes 21.9

Governing topics

What is a governing topic

Governing topics or policies are actions that political parties want to put into action when they get into power.

There are 2 topic that are important to me which are Transport and Infrastructure and education.

Transport and infrastructure
Fixing how people move around the country and how buildings are organised.

Education
Is when you learn new things such as Rounding ( Maths skill).

I voted for transport and infrastructure because it's important because my parents use vehicles on a daily basis. I voted for education because I'm still young and I'm still developing my mind set.

Rounding

Rounding is finding the nearest ten, hundred, thousand.

Addition and division are both strategies the are used for rounding. To round the person needs to find the mean, to find the mean get a set of numbers like 5,7,1,9,3 and then add them altogether which would make the number 25. Then divide them by the amount of numbers there are which makes 5.

Now this is were the rounding begins, if the number is 5-9 that makes the number go up. If the number 0-4 it makes the number go down. For example 21.85 then it becomes 21.9

Risk assessment

First we recapped on what a hazard and a risk is. A hazard is a object that can cause harm and a risk is a possibility that a hazard can cause harm.We also recapped the risk levels which are low, likely, possible, elevated and extreme.

Then we wrote a safety plan on activity called risk assessment. For this task we wrote the class year level, the number of helpers, the number of students and the location. For every 10 students there is 1 helper.

Then we answered questions like what could go wrong?, how we could prevent this?

Lastly we wrote a emergency plan/solution is were a risk overcomes a much serious situation.

Rewriting a Narrative

LI: To rewrite a narrative

Rewriting is where you take a small part of story and change using your ideas. The three things that you change is the character, where the character lives and the Gruffalos favourite thing to eat.

The part I changed was the fox scene. I changed the fox to a tiger because they are both predators.
I made tiger live in a cave because caves are cold and tigers love cold temperature places. Lastly I made the Gruffalos favourite food tiger bolognese.

Making connections

LI: To identify and describe connections

Text to self is something that happened in the book which has happened to you. For example:In the of the Gruffalo the mouse was quite scared when he first met the Gruffalo.

Text to text is something that happened in the book that also happened in another book. For example: in the Gruffalo the mouse goes on a long journey to find nut. In the story Rahi and the Patupaiarehe, Rahi goes on a long journey to find his wife.

Text to world is where a text links to something we all do in the world. For example

In the story of the Gruffalo, the female squirrel found nuts for her kids to eat. Parents around the world but food for their kids to eat.

Commenting/ Carson's blog post

For commenting I decided to comment Carson's blogpost about the legend of Rahi and Te ara (reading). The dialogic question I asked was: Have you played the game Kia o Rahi?
I asked this question because the game is based of the book. The one thing I liked about the blog post is the way he summarised it.

Basic facts boxes

For basic facts I took the speed demon challenge with multiplication. My time was 4 minutes and 55 seconds. I  got no mistakes but I needed to be more faster.

SSR Selfie

For SSR Selfie I summarised the book called shocking electricity. The main topic is about electricity.
I found this book really enjoyable to read because, I learnt different facts and how important electricity is to the world. I also didn't know that a light bulb uses 6.28 billion electrons every second.

Simile

A simile is a comparison of two thing using 'like', or and 'as...as'. A simile is part of figurative language.

The like simile is used with a verb. Examples using like:

The elephant toothpaste exploded like a volcano.
Oscar swims like a dolphin.
The couple danced like fire.

The as....as is used with an adjective. Examples using as....as:

The man's muscles are as big as an elephant.
The man is as smart as Albert Einstein.
Kahu is as small as a mouse.

Similes help people compare two things in a more detailed way.

L.I- To learn what is simile.

Reading/ Story web/Legend of Rahi

For reading we had learnt about summarising.

What is a summarising?

Summarising is where you talk about the main points/main idea of the text

I learnt how to summarise a text by doing story web by talking about the main ideas of the story.

In the events I used my visualising piece of paper from 2 weeks ago to help me remember each event that happened in the book.

I used my character inference to use adjectives and evidence to help summarise different parts. using good adjectives unlocks meaningful information, and I can summarise quicker.

Then I used some of my prior knowledge where I remembered the names like Te ara, Rahi and
Tama-nui-te-rā from a game I've played called, Kia o Rahi. I found out this story is how the game was created . Then I use this information for my ending.#

BFB/ Basic Facts boxes

Today for basic facts I did up to 10 speed demon. I did really well I got 3 minutes and 21 seconds. I got some of them correct and some of the top ones wrong. I think I need to try more harder.

SSR Selfie

For SSR selfie my book was 100 scientist who made history. I learnt that science is one of the biggest things in history.

LI: To retell a story

Commenting

For commenting I commented on Kruse's blog post about swimming. I first commented my thoughts on the blog post. Then I thought of 2 dialogic questions that I think he will reply to.

Identifying punctuation

For writing we had to do 2 task.

The overall task was to identify and use punctuation in sentences.

The first task was identifying punctuation. I moved the correct symbols and sentences that matched the punctuation.

The second task was trying to use all of the punctuation in as few sentences as we could. I had six sentences using all of the punctuation.

I found all of these task very interesting because now I know how to use all punctuation when i'm writing.
