Today I finished the tastes of summer task, for the summer learning journey.

Before starting task I watched the to get an Idea of what to do.

For this task we had to pick 3 favourite foods that we like to eat during the summer time.

Building a dam | Summer learning journey

Today I completed the dam task of the summer learning journey.

First I went on the summer learning job to find out what a dam is. I watched both to understand what a dam is.

A dam is a barrier that stops the flow of water.

After getting a better understanding of what a dam is, I started doing my template. After completing my dam on the template I wrote what materials I used and why I used them. My materials were sticks, mud, rocks and leaves.

In my template you can see why I decided to used these materials.

Nano Girl | Xylophones

In this activity for the summer learning journey we had to make 2 xylophones. I created one xylophone using a glass cup and water and the second using paper and tape.

For the first xylophone I used 3 cups. Then I poured different amounts of water into the glass to make  different pitches. A pitch is the vibration from the cup which makes the sound.

How much water you have, depends on how much glass can vibrate. Like if the glass of cup is halfway fulled of water it makes a low pitch, but if there is a small amount of glass it make a high pitch sound. Lastly, I tested my xylophone using a pencil, by gently tapping the glass.

For the second and last xylophone I made was used out of paper and tape. To make the xylophone I used 5 sheets of paper. Afterwards I rolled the paper into a tube, then used tape to secure the paper from it opening. I had to cut the tubes smaller and smaller from each other to make the different pitches. Similar to what I did on the first xylophone. If you have a long tube it would most likely make a low pitch sound. If you have a short tube you most like to get a high pitch sound.

Here is me using my xylophones:

Haiku

For this task we had to try make a haiku based on summer.

A haiku is a poet that has 5 syllables, 7 syllables , lastly 5 syllables again.

My haiku is about being at the beach. Here is my haiku: Sun shining on me, relax on the hot yellow sand, enjoy a nice ice cream.

This is my favourite task yet.

Summer learning journey | Commenting

Commenting on others blog is a great way to share your idea learning with each other.

I commented of Deysen's blog post of his Kawhaiwhai blog post.

His blog post was amazing. My question to Deysen was how did his colours represent summer. The colours that he used were white, black and green.

Activity 1 | SLJ | Nano girl

In the first part of the summer learning journey we were introduced to nano girl, also known as Michelle Dickson. She is a educator who teaches kids in New Zealand about science.

For our first task with nano girl, we had to go for a scavenger hunt to find some materials that we would be using with for the next 6 weeks.

We used screencastify to showcase we found during the treasure hunt.

Presentation

Today my group presented our presentation about our shelter to get the contract.

First we got prepared by practising our lines from our speech. We had to make sure that our speech persuades our clients.

After that we presented our speech. In our speech it involved why should they invest in it, the alternatives of each material, how we designed the shelter, and what we used to create it.

Our feedback was about most of the time being used by saying nothing like forgetting lines. Our second feedback was not showing our cardboard prototype while presenting. Our last feedback was about the look of our presentation.

Our feedback taught me to be fully prepared. It also taught me to pay more attention to the work. Next time I will learn to speak with more confidence.

Faulty Reasoning

Faulty Reasoning is giving a reason which didn't strongly convince another side of their argument. There are 5 types of faulty reasoning: illogical or simplified assumption, circular reasoning , over generalisation, contradiction and biased argument.

Circular reasoning is supporting a claim with the same claim.

Contradiction is providing evidence that goes against the original argument.

Illogical or simplified assumption is making a global statement when there are likely exceptions.

A over generalisation is making a global statement when there are likely exceptions.

A biased argument is making a claim that is influenced by your own personal feelings or experience

The first activity we did was to find a sentence that involves a faulty reasoning. We had to try figure out what faulty reasoning that the sentence was using. The second activity we did was where we had to guess what faulty reasoning that a sentence was using. The last and third activity we did was where we had to make a faulty reasoning sentence for the 5 faulty reasoning's.

Filming

This week my group started filming using our screenplays.

Before filming we practised our lines. We used our story boards to figure out what location that we are are going to film at.

After that we started filming the scenes of our narrative.  I found filming fun but hard because sometimes we forget what to say.
